We are GREAT HIGHWAY

Great Highway originally formed in 2012 as an acoustic guitar-driven pop-rock group, but over the years has blossomed into an edgy electronic rock outfit that represents the eclectic electro scene thriving in the SF Bay Area.

To date, Great Highway has developed a signature brand of dark electropop that seamlessly blends pumping electronic sounds with analog instrumentation. Their earworm songs package venomous and sorrowful lyrics with the lush, moody vibes of The Xx, the powerhouse male-female vocals of The Naked & Famous, and the dance-y yet sentimental arrangements of ODESZA.

About the band

Jason Hunter / lead vocals, bass, audio production

Jason is the founder of Great Highway, plays bass onstage, and is the band's lead singer alongside Sarah. Behind the scenes, he handles all audio production work for the band's almost four studio albums. Jason has trained one on one with several professional audio producers in and around the Bay Area, and has also produced tracks and remixes for a handful of Bay Area bands, solo artists, a cappella groups and other musical acts. He works in the design and content team at StubHub.com and, in addition to playing bass, plays saxopone, keys, and guitar.

Sarah Morgan / lead vocals, synth

Sarah has been playing piano for 25 years and writing music for 20. She first cut her teeth as a piano-driven singer-songwriter inspired by Fiona Apple, Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan, but her true musical fascination has always been electronic-influenced pop. After graduating college, Sarah began playing synth for various local rock groups in San Francisco, and in 2014 joined Great Highway to lend her talents as an lyricist, singer and synth composer. She is most influenced by powerful yet vulnerable pop artists such as Metric, Phantogram, London Grammar, La Roux and Ellie Goulding.

Sean McAllister / guitar, vocals

Sean McAllister is a guitarist, percussionist and songwriter with musical roots originally centered on Americana, pop and rich vocal harmonies.  While fronting an acoustic pop and vocal harmony group, Sean began to develop a great interest in melding the lush analog feel of live instruments and vocal harmonies with EDM.  He discovered the early musical compositions of Jason Hunter from the album Ghost of Us and knew a collaborative project would yield exciting results.  Three years later, and the addition of Sarah Morgan, Makiko Harris, and Meredith Whelan, Great Highway is soaring to new creative heights.

Meredith Whelan / DJ, vocals

Meredith is Great Highway's DJ/percussionist and has been with the band for 2 years. She has a background in theatre, dance, and stage production and is inspired by Grimes, Chvrches, Die Antwoord, and KITTENS. In addition to Great Highway, she loves martial arts, tap dance, and true crime television and her animagus is a capybara.

Makiko Harris / violin

Makiko Harris is a San Francisco based violinist, vocalist, and electronic musician. She comes from a strong background in classical violin performance, chamber and orchestral music, and music theory - including attending San Domenico School's Virtuoso Program, playing with the San Francisco Youth Orchestra as a young adult, and attending Summer Intensives at the Berklee School of Music to study jazz and improvisation. Currently, Makiko is establishing herself as an electronic musician with Great Highway, and is set to release her first full length album with the band in 2017. Behind the scenes, Makiko and Sarah manage the band's PR, marketing, video media, and booking efforts.
